This table was developed in response to Hershey’s announcement that they would remove beet sugar from some of their products because sugarbeet varieties in the US are GMO (Roundup Ready). A switch from beet sugar to cane sugar (or vice-versa) has potential environmental impacts, only a small portion of which is related to herbicide use. Tillage practices, water use, fertilizers, and other pesticides all contribute to the environmental impact of crop production.
I don’t know which is ‘better’ for the environment, cane vs beet sugar. But I suspect @HersheyCompany didn’t consider that question, either.
